The Castle of Yecla, built at the end of the 11th centuryduring the first period of Taifas.
In the second half of the 12th century, its premises were enlarged when a small palace complex was built within the castle. On its south-east side a small village or “medina” was built from scratch, and at the same time a process of Islamisation commenced in the territory, which will end with the construction of three farmhouses dedicated to farming and livestock on the territory.

Painted in red hues that tend to show black.

What’s so special about it?:
Archaeological excavations in the “medina” or small village have discovered to date a total of fourteen houses or buildings which follow the Hispanic-Andalusian architectural model: a central courtyard around which the other rooms are organized. A certain degree of urban planning is also noticeable in its streets, in addition to health infrastructures which permitted waste water disposal and the supply of drinking water. The “maqbara” (Islamic cemetery) was located on the outskirts of the small village.
